Saturday's And Sunday's At Farrell's

"Some day you will be old enough
to start reading fairy tales again."

~C.S. Lewis

Oh yes, here I go again dwelling on my youth. Really, seriously, I am finding a great deal of joy in my current reality. I have my hobbies, such as photography and birding. I have three beautiful cat children, and a husband who treats me like I'm made of gold. But not that hideous gold spray paint Trump likes to cover everything with, but rather real gold, white gold, like my hair, because lets face it, there is plenty of white hair on the top of my head now. 64 will do that to you!

I wouldn't change my white hair for the world, but some days, when I look in the mirror, I see my life inching away to the point that I wonder when I will forget my past all together! Time. How could 45 years go by so fast? And how can it take the best of everything with it? Everything eventually changes, and passes away, sometimes even great restaurant's that you didn't think would ever go away! Grain D'or bakery, Banchero's Italian Dinners, and the ice cream parlour... Farrells, all the places I though would live forever. But that's what we do when we are young, live like there is no canceling waiting for us, which is as it should be!

I found a cool documentary the other day, that both delighted me, and broke my heart at the same time. It brought back such memories of spending Saturday afternoons, after movies, and Sunday afternoons after church, laughing with my friends, and just hanging out at the mall, at Ferrell's! The ice cream was smooth and Lucious, and they certainly had plenty of flavors to pick from! Farrell's was a big part of the fun for me. My personal favorite ice cream sundae was the, Blackberry Straw-ana, 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, with bananas, whipped cream and toasty nuts on top!, Alan's favorite was the Gibson Girl Sundae. It was huge!

After my teens, when I began working, my job wasn't too far from the Hayward airport, and Southland Mall, so my friends and I would drop in there for lunch. That was in the early 1980's, and at that time the menu had been revamped somewhat, and you could build your own hamburger! There were tons of choices, but I was set in my ways, even back then. My burger always consisted of a burger Pattie, tomato, Swiss cheese, 3 slices of deli ham and thousand Island dressing. Never onions. Never pickles, Never lettuce.  I still put that combination on my hamburgers even after all these years! Yes, it's a glorified Big Mac, but Farrell's buns were better, They toasted them with plenty of butter!

And now, it's all a memory. Who would have thought that a fantastic restaurant, like Ferrell's would fade away? Now I won't lie, there was a very unpleasant occurrence in the 1970's when a plane crashed into the restaurant in Sacramento, killing numerous people, but that didn't tarnish their reputation, Farrells endured for many years after that, in fact the last one just closed. Unfortunately it was way to far away from me to be able to visit one last time, Ferrell's joins the great culinary cemetery with other great diner restaurants like, Baker's Square, Lyons, and Carrows.

So, all that remains are the memories, And the haunting sounds of laughter, memories, of those who have long since passed.

Too many friends, in the blink of an eye.

Watch that really cool documentary. Farrell's was a very special place, you'll enjoy it's rich history!

Ellipsis Movie Of The Week... Leave The World Behind

"We fuck each other all the time, without even realizing it. We fuck every living thing on the planet over and over and think it will be fine because we use paper straws and order free-range chicken. And the sick thing is, I think deep down we know we're not fooling anyone."

~Amanda Sanford ( Julia Roberts )
Leave The World Behind
From the book, Leave The World Behind
By Rumaan Alam

"Well, when I couldn't fall back asleep thus morning, I came over here. To watch thr sunrise. And I saw all these people starting their day with such tenacity. Such verve. All in an effort... make something of themselves. Make something of the world. I felt so lucky to be a part of that. But then I remembered... what the world is really like. And I came to a more accurate realization. I fucking hate people."

~Amanda Sandford ( Julia Roberts )
Leave The World Behind

Do you ever wake up one day, and think to yourself, I can't take one more day of humanity? I know I do, often. Like the character of Amanda, I have, at times, become weary of of being around people in 2026! Things are so selfish and scary. The glee and glow, for some Americans, comes not from living the American dream, but rather the thought that we would all be better off if a nice little civil war would take place, to save America from... us. This movie addresses one such path towards the end of the world, through frightening means.

Strange happenings. Coincidences. Conspiracy theories and a sudden lack of connection to the outside world, and it's affect on an America used to being plugged in all the time! It all leads to the feeling of being on the outside looking in, all while feeling all to aware that life has gotten very, very, real when you weren't looking. The collection of eerie moments in this film are terrific, one such involved the arrival of an large container ship, on the shore of a pristine beach! Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawk are perfect as a couple who are almost polar opposites, but who used those differences to apply critical thinking to their new circumstances. Two different perspectives is a good thing!

But soon, it turns out to be about more then just them trying to figure it all out! Is it danger calling, help calling, or is it something eerily different?

I don't want to give it all away, so go watch the movie! There is a cool tie-in to the television show, Friends, so here is a little music that fits very well with the movie!

Ellipsis Christmas Movie Countdown #8

"If you look for it, I've a sneaky feeling that you'll find that love actually is all around."

~Hugh Grant as the Prime Minister
Love Actually

What a cast!

Love is the star of this movie. The kind of love that is universal. The dagger to the heart love, first love, the love you have to let go of. Heartbreak love, selfish love, and love that is eternal. The absence of love, love of enduring friendship and. of course, the love of one another. If you aren't in the mood for a syrupy Christmas tale, at least watch the first five minutes for the Christmas son sung by Bill Nighy. It almost steals the whole movie, but frankly, love always be the star!

For Immediate Release

“So, for anyone who questions whether allies matter, they do. Today is a powerful example of why it’s vital to have friends in this world. Friends you can trust, work with and depend upon, especially on matters of great consequence and sensitivity like this.
Our alliances make our people safer.”

President Joe Biden
August 1st 2024

I hope folks remember that, when preparing to vote this coming November. Right now, in Trump, people on the right are seeing the entertainer, not the dangerous reality TV buffoon. Joe Biden has been an amazing president, and he will work for us until his last day in office. I can sleep at night because of him, so I honestly don't understand why folks can't see what a decent man he is. I am hoping by November, the voting public with begin to see, Trump for who, and what, he is! A selfish man, who is in it to keep himself out of prison. I have the greatest of faith in the Biden/Harris administration, and for Kamala Harris as president one day soon! Lately, every day seems better than the last. I am almost afraid to be this happy!

Autumn Leaf Of The Day #40

“A brisk autumn breeze flowed past, bringing with it scents from the city below: bread and cinnamon and oranges; roast meats and salt. Nesta inhaled, identifying each one, wondering how they could all somehow combine to create a singular sense of autumn.”

~Sarah J. Maas,

I miss Treat Williams. Each Autumn, he would post the most beautiful videos, filmed from his small plane, of the gorgeous foliage in New England, and Vermont in particular. They made me happy inside. I got to see, and look forward to how Autumn spends it's time on the east coast. I would like to experience all that Vermont has to offer, from the small towns, and apple farms, homemade Autumn Beef Stew, and the earthiness of fresh pumpkins still on the vine, to the poetry of living in the moment in autumn. I miss my friend, he understood the love I feel for autumn. Wherever he is, I hope he is soaring high above the maple trees, and playing in a lovely pile of autumn leaves.

Okay, Here Goes... Part One: Autumn Friends

"Death ends a life, not a relationship"

~Mitch Albom
Tuesday's with Morrie

I said I have two things to share. One will obviously be about the second indictment and subsequent arrest of Donald Trump. That took place on Tuesday, June 13th, but something happened before we all got there. On Monday, June 12th, Treat Williams passed away. It broke my heart into tiny pieces. It was sudden. An accident that never should have happened, but happen it did all the same. A motorist turned into his path, and Treat never had a chance to stop. He was on his motorcycle, and the wearing of a helmet did not prevent other injuries from happening. I thought I would be seeing a tweet from him about the arrest of Trump, but no, he was just gone in the early evening of June 12th. As I sit here writing this it still seems really odd, and surreal that someone so in touch with the joys of life, who still marveled at so much, and who got so much out of the smallest of things, and simplest of moments, is no longer here.

I had followed him on, Twitter, for the better part of a decade. He made me laugh. He made me reconsider my opinions from time to time. I enjoyed seeing his photos from various sets he was on. Movies and tv shows alike. The man never sat down when it came to his craft. I loved seeing his home and family. His property in Vermont was nothing short of paradise. And the trips he took with his various airplanes took my breath away, especially his flights over Vermont during the autumn. From the sky you could get lost in every single color you could imagine, demonstrating autumn wasn't always about earth tones, autumn was vibrant and joyful and beautiful. It was all... so damn amazing, so much so, that the thought of that amazing life being gone so fast, was never in my mind. Why would it be? He was one of the few, if not the only one at times, that didn't dwell on the negativity of life, but rather how to handle it by searching for the light and the joy.

That's not to say that he didn't have his moments. Trump could have gotten to Gandhi. One such moment, I don't even know exactly why he tweeted it, but suddenly Treat tweeted, "Shut up and do your job, you big fat baby!" which I have to say, delighted me to no end! I laughed and laughed and used about 200 laughing emojis in the reply form. Sheesh. Maybe my reaction was a little too much, but I felt that way all the same. He had just expressed, what I had always wanted to say, except it was now coming from one of the nicest folks around, which in my mind made it fabulous. It was funny, and appreciated. Then one day, sometime later, I left a comment about one of his autumn flights over Vermont, and something kinda nice happened, if not downright magical, he answered me! A great big movie star answered me, and I blushed, I really did. Treat said he was, "proud to know me". Wait... we know each other?

It took me a little while to consider that. It never dawned on me that he knew I was even there, let alone... gulp... know me. Or... yikes... was "proud to know me." Now what? Are we pals? Are we friends? How did he come to that assessment? Was it the things I said in my rambling comments? It's not like one could ask, that would be rude! Imagine this... "Hey buddy... whats that nice comment all about?" Twitter can be a strange place sometimes. Friendships are made fairly easily, and then just as easily folks can disappear from your timeline, for all kinds of reasons, it's never really been something I take too seriously. Life just happens, and it happens on social media too, only with walls that are invisible, but that are as strong as any wall can be. I like walls when it comes to celebrities. On my best day, as a fangirl of 61, I can sound like a nutty stalker, or a childish girl of 16, amazed at the talents of Shawn Cassidy. Who I also follow by the way.

So he answered me a few more times, and wished me a "back at you" at Christmas one year, and sweetly sang for us during Covid-19, at my request, although I think he had thought of it first, and was merely,  again, taking the time to answer me. But it was nice. It was always nice. He made folks feel at ease. He made me feel at ease. He felt like a friend. I guess that's okay, right? Do a few interactions over Twitter make you a friend or does the word "hello" followed by a lifetime of happy lunches and intimate sharing of ideas? Things can get fairly deep and philosophical on Twitter, so I know enough to believe we were of like minds, so maybe that is enough, to consider him my friend in the most basic sense of the word. I looked forward to his silly tweets and his opinions. I had respect for him and maybe that is enough.

In any case, I know I will miss him forever, he was my friend. He has left a hole in me. No one fills the holes left inside our hearts when loved ones pass, it's the part of us that belonged to someone special. To fill that hole is too much like replacing them. Some folks are irreplaceable. Treat was a part of me, but I will always have the movie, Hair, to watch in the moments when I am feeling blue about things. As scary as things ever got with the world, he had a way of looking at it and reminding us, we could make it through, and we were all connected as part of the tribe. I was so very lucky to connect with such a good person. And how lucky I was that an extraordinary man was proud to know me. I sure hope I made him smile once in a while, because I was so proud to know him too.

Goodnight, Treat
God's speed.

Gladys And Friends On Ashby

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious.
It is the fundamental emotion that stands
at the cradle of true are and true science."

~Albert Einstein
The World As I See It

Remember Gladys? Gladys and I go way back. We made friends back in 2014, while I was stopped in traffic on Ashby avenue, in Berkeley, California. I had just finished with a therapy appointment, and was on my way to do errands in the East Bay, when I looked over, and there she was! As I explained in the original post, I had probably passed her a thousand times, without ever realizing she was there! I just happened to be in the right place, at the right time to notice that tucked back from the road, ever so slightly, was this beautiful lady and some of her friends. Not doing much of anything, just waiting for a slightly sad, perhaps a bit lonely neurotic lady to stop in traffic long enough to notice her.

I don't think her name is actually Gladys, that's just what I call her. While I was studying her that day, that name just came to me, and we have been friends ever since. Eventually I took up politely waving when I passed her coming into or leaving town. I enjoyed doing that. It was a landmark in town that made me feel safe, and comfortable, even downright happy sometimes. She is a cool piece of art, watching over the road, and she is all the beauty and mystery that art should be.

There is some paper attached to the little building that she shares with her friends, but I have deliberately chosen to avoid reading it to see if her real name and story is there. I kind of like things as they are. She's a cool pal, and I like thinking of her that way. I miss Berkeley so much that it makes my heart hurt sometimes, but I look forward to seeing Gladys wherever I visit, and I know she will be right there when I come home. She continually inspires me to look a little deeper at all the places I photograph. What if there are more out there like her, and I simply missed them over the years? Nah... she's clearly an original, but I still find myself looking deeper into the big picture, and for that I am grateful to Gladys and her friends on Ashby, in Berkeley, California.

See you again soon, Gladys!

Relevance In Autumn/Longing For Winter

"Autumn is the greatest reminder: It reminds us how dreamlike beauties our earh has and it reminds us how all these beautiful dreams can easily vanish!"

~Mehmet Murat ildan

I suppose anything can suddenly vanish. It's happened to everyone. Look what the folks of the town of Paradise went through. They had their homes and businesses in one moment, and it was all gone the next. In the span of a day... or in some cases, only an hour or two. I am lucky to have friends, and I even have the pleasure of making the occasional stranger on Twitter laugh or think, the later tends to be more difficult. Just kidding. That's pretty nice, but will there always be a Twitter to provide a window to the world? Even if it's my decision?

I am tired. I am lonely in a crowd and Autumn isn't going to last nearly long enough. Sigh. I am beginning to slip into going through the motions of life. I get up. Take care of things. Read a little while. Watch Nicole Wallace. Wander Twitter. Visit whoever pops up. Get ready for Alan. Help prep dinner, unless my Fibromyalgia is flaring. Watch a couple movies with Alan. Edit the days photos. Blog here. Go back on Twitter. Visit some accounts that don't make my head explode late at night. Karen. Joe. Margo. Treat Williams. He seems like a nice man. There is a lot to like about Twitter. But lets face it, Twitter is stressful. Twitter isn't the same because of Donald Trump, and mostly I find myself waiting for Trump to get us all killed by tweet. I wait to die either of embarrassment, or just plain die. So, why am I there?

I don't know. I mean it's been nice finding out Treat Williams is a nice guy, he's only ALWAYS been my favorite actor. Go figure.  Who knew there were nice guys anymore, but let's face it, would he notice if I went missing? Nah. I am one tiny peep, in an international sea of peeping music. Shrug. I just don't know where my peep, peep, peep fits in anywhere. Does it have a specific place? Or am I just one more ridiculous whiny chirp? WHINNNNNNE, Yes, I'm whining, but it's my blog and that's why I began blogging, to clear the head noise as my old friend Penny used to call it. Clearing head noise. I don't know, maybe I am just heading into the darkness of my second favorite season I crave, after the bright leaf singing of autumn. Leaves can be loud, if you listen too long. That's a definite possibility.

Okay. All done. Back to life on Twitter. My head is clear of noise.

I think.

Leaves fall. All autumn leaves must fall.

Stress, Friendship And Knowing Yourself In The Time Of Trump

"Reality is the leading cause of stress
amongst those in touch with it."

~Jane Wagner

It's been almost two months since my last post. That's an odd realization for me, because I pretty much blogged every day this blog existed, up until a couple years ago. The big move, and all the subsequent drama kept me busy, and emotional, so a lot of the time I was too tired to post or simply didn't have the will. This past autumn I felt better. I got out with the camera and resumed my Leaf Of The Day project, and I thought I might be getting back to some emotional normalcy, and then the election happened and once again I found myself in the depths of despair, and I am finding it really difficult to climb back out.

There was a day when I would use my blog to fight through the political and day to day life nonsense. I welcomed opposing opinions, and looked forward to the debate. Patrick, if you're reading this, you know what I mean. LOL. You and I could go on and on and it would get heated but eventually we would shake it off, maybe even take a breather from each other's blog till the dust settled, but in an appropiate amount of time come back and pick up where we left off... good friends. And I am pleased to say to this day that if I ever needed someone to remember me in their prayers, I could ask you, and you would be there without reservation. For that I will always smile and be grateful when I see you on my Twitter timeline.

I've made a lot of causal friends over social media. Whether or not we keep in touch, doesn't matter so much because we all have real lives outside of the Internet. If I haven't seen someone for a while, and they pop in to say hello, it's always nice to pick back up. I like this distance to a certain degree. I have tried to not let my worlds collide. I am a private person. I rarely share my address, or phone number, and I don't speak much about what my day to day life is like because it feels so personal. I am happy in my real life. Happy marriage. Three amazing cats that keep me laughing, and my hubby and I now own our own home for the first time in our marriage. Life is should be good. But it's not. Not at all.

I am not prepared to blame the depression I have been fighting all on Donald Trump, but I have to say... he doesn't help, in fact, he scares the living SHIT out of me on a daily basis, and on the days I get up not scared, he either pisses me off or embarrasses me to the point I find myself apologizing to the world on Twitter, and begging the forgiveness of clearer thinking countries, which is strange because I didn't vote for him, so why do I feel I have to apologize? But in any case... I do. And I do.

A couple days ago, I did something I've never done before, I blocked a Twitter pal. Yes a republican, but he is a lot more than that. He's quite talented. Funny. Intelligent. Kind. Compassionate, and a lot more nice things I suspect. Don't get me wrong, we weren't best friends, or "go to" pals, but I genuinely liked him and admired his photography skills. I hoped to learn some things about photography from him, they way I learned from Steven. I was kinda lost after Steven died, so to make a new friend who I could share similar fondness for photography with was really nice, even if we only talked ocassionally. I hope that makes sense.

Anyway, when the 2016 election rolled around my friend and I would exchange the occasional barbs about left verses right and we would sometimes have some heated exchanges about our various perspectives, but it usually ended cordially, but after Trump won things felt different. In me. I don't really blame my friend for his opinion, but it all feels so irrational from the other side. It feels like when I am trying to make a point, there is no point in trying because they simply won't see or understand whats trying to be conveyed. I don't expect folks in my orbit to feel exactly like I do, but for GOD'S SAKE it feels like rational thought is dead, and has been replaced with willful ignorance.

Understand... I am not saying that is how my friend behaved. No. But I said to him recently... "... listen, we are never going to agree on Donald Trump, his policies, his behavior or anything attached to this administration so we might as well just know that now. We just aren't." My friend agreed. We laughed a little and kicked the idea around of perhaps one day battling it out over drinks. LOL. And I left him with the request that he drop by my Twitter feed once in a while, when he isn't there to tell me how completely wrong I was. LOL. Maybe he could just come by and say "Hi... hows the weather." Again. It was a joke, meant lightheartedly, and he accepted it as such.

Well, the other day he did just that. He came by and left me a link to a Facebook post about an otter. I was adoreable. I liked it very much, and it touched me that my friend was trying to reach out. So, everything should be perfect... right? Well, timing is everything. I saw it just as Donald Trump was holding his idiotic press conference about the U.S. exiting the Paris Accord. So, I am watching a nice video about a fuzzy sea creature that my republican pal sent me, and wanting to kick my television in and scream MUTHERFUCKER at the same time. It was NOT good timing.

Something in me died. I felt it. I looked at my friend's face and knew in that moment I had to block him. Not so much because of him, but because of me. I knew that humans being humans I would one day, once again, engage with my pal in a political debate and I would go too far. I would say something dreadful that I couldn't take back. Words have meanings, and when you say something awful, out of rage, but mean it anyway, people get hurt. I don't want my friend to become the face of all the trolls who hunt me down after I leave a comment about the SHITTGIBBON we have in the White House. I don't want to take my anger, pain, frustration, fear, OH MY GOD FEAR, out on him with words I might actually mean one day.

I don't like hurting people.
I have been hurt so badly, so many times, you have NO idea.
I would rather just close the door.
And NOT say something I can't take back.

Stress in my real life, bleeds over into my virtual life, and vice versa, since Donald Trump decided to fuck our democracy. There was a time when I could handle both, but I am not doing that well right now. I am working on it, but when you can't sleep at night that doesn't help you make good decisions. I know it will all work it's way out in time. Impeachment seems likely or at least possible. Perhaps making the mortgage payments will get easier. I will learn some method of dealing with my fear of nuclear holocaust. Folks will begin waking up and realizing Trump only cares about Trump. My back will always hurt, but maybe a better medication or exercise will come along to help me deal with it. I don't know, but if my life has taught me anything it's the that ... "this too shall pass" ...is an absolute. It will pass.

But in the meantime the journey gets
lonely and a little sad at times.

A Little Less Blue, A Little More Purple

"It was strange walking through the empty apartment. My battered purple room was gone, Brittany's bruised blue was gone. Two coats covered everything. It was like none of it had ever happened."

~Kimberly Novosel
Loved

Okay, so the packing is coming along. Alan and I just invested about $80 in Space Bags and almost every set of sheets, and all my blankets and throws are now completely encased in plastic, flattened into a dense pancake shape, resting on the floor of my closet. As is all my coats, sweaters, warm socks, and some assorted catnip toys. All of which could be of good use at the moment, as it feels like 30 degrees outside! LOL. Isn't that always the way? You put an air-conditioner in the window, and pack all your Winter apparel in storage, and BAM it rains a cold Spring rain.

I don't have purple walls in my apartment, I have Cornflower blue walls. I do, however, have a pair of purple lily lamps. They are cuter than they sound. I always loved that purple color, next to the color of those blue walls. So pretty. Hopefully, wherever we end up moving to, we will be able to paint the walls a nice color. Who knows, maybe a nice purple color this time. Like the purple in Monica and Rachel's apartment on Friends. I always loved their apartment. Yeah, maybe a little less blue and a little more purple in my life.

Memento Mori

"All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another persons
 ( or thing's ) mortality, vulnerability, mutability.
Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt."

~Susan Sontag

The year 2014 is facing it's mortality. And I for one am ready to grieve it and leave it. What a dreadful, treacherous, mean spirited, devastating year it has been. So much sadness... so much loss. Most of it pointless. If I hadn't had my cameras, and my new McDillet friends, I don't know what I would have done. They make me smile. They make me laugh, and they remind me that there is something else to focus on besides grief, politics, and the negative forces in the universe! Isn't life odd and random sometimes?

While I have been a fan of Dylan McDermott's for years and years, I never knew how much he would come to mean to me. If not for him, and the fun I found through him, by way of the McDillet Babes, his devoted fans, and Daily McDermott, I would have rarely smiled at all this year! I will always be a little in love with him just for that, let alone all the million or so other reasons, such as his kind heart, his generosity, and his warmth toward his fans. He is a very nice man.

Okay, so now I want to look back at a few photos that for one reason or another
didn't make it into an Ellipsis post, because they are lovely, and deserve to be seen!

He Was My Forever Friend

"And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet
and the winds long to play with your hair."

~Khalil Gibran
The Prophet

"Close your eyes and turn your face into the wind."

Feel it sweep along your skin in an invisible ocean of exultation.

Suddenly, you know you are alive."

The Perpetual Calendar Of Inspiration

This is the last full day of autumn, and out of all the last few months, it was those windy days of October and late November I remember the most fondly. The sound of the leaves rolling across the yard, reminded me of my cat Elvis. He loved to play in the crunchy leaves of an old poplar tree we used to have. Oh my, the sound of him crunching those leaves, especially when he was outside late at night, was such a fun sound to me. He would stomp along for what seemed like forever.  He was so happy. And I remember how he seemed to enjoy the sound the wind chimes when they swayed in the breeze. Elvis was such a fun cat. He liked the smell of flowers, and he liked sounds and textures. I miss him... a lot. He was always by my side in the yard when I did my photos, and he became a big part of my autumn inspiration. He passed away in 2008, and you would think I would have gotten over him by now, but not a day goes by that I don't think of him. He was a beautiful cat, and a very kind soul, and fun to play with in autumn... or in any season really.

He was my forever friend.

"Faeries, come take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the disheveled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame."
