Time And Chance

Everything, even a rusty old truck, is beautiful in autumn. I loved this scene, when we happened upon it, on our visit to Apple Hill, earlier this week. I am sure that beautiful old farm truck carries a lot memories for someone. Did it carry the best of an autumn harvest? Apples? Pumpkins? Pears? Maybe even grapes for wine? How many autumn harvests did it work through? Was it loved and appreciated? I will probably never know, but I can see its life in my imagination, and I will always remember the warmth I felt inside, as I was looking at it through the lens of my Nikon! I just had to photograph it! Even if no one else has a harvest memory attached to it, at least I do, and it makes me feel really good!

The air was a little better yesterday, but I stayed in all the same. It wasn't clear enough to keep my eyes from burning, so I reconciled myself to do laundry, read and play a while on Twitter. It wasn't a bad day, but it wasn't an autumn love story either. I feel like this last month of autumn is being terribly cheated of the burst of life it has in it's heart. Fate. So, in absence of the ability to do any measurable new photography, so I chose a photo, or two from the early archives of this autumn. September 24th to be exact. As you can see, summer had kissed autumn hello, pretty early, and it seemed like summer couldn't wait for it's old friend to take over, so it could finally lay down and sleep. 

When the air clears, and the sun is shining again, all will be right with the world. And I have a feeling, that while autumn was looked away in the fire's prison, it will only emerge brighter and stronger than ever, ready to once again fill my soul with the one thing that makes me feel alive, the decline of light and the seductive scent of autumn and the harvest of another year.

The Tree Within The Tree

The other day, while Alan and I were bouncing from fruit stand to fruit stand, throughout the Central Valley, we happened by one stand that was selling firewood, and I spotted this piece of wood. It was really dry, and covered with spider webs, dust and dry bark, but the pattern on the inside made me smile. I see in that pattern, an almost snapshot of a once beautiful tree, with many beautiful branches, standing tall an proud, maybe even covered with beautiful autumn leaves. I bet in it's day it filled the heart of those who viewed it, or relied on it for income, as so many do in the valley!

Walnuts, apricots, apples... we got almost everything out here. And now, it will be sold to provide warmth for someone! It's a wonderful end to it's life I think. I know seeing it inspired me and I really enjoyed the chance to see the tree within the tree! It was kinda like seeing it's soul! When I have my camera in my hand, I always try to see beyond the obvious, or the seemingly trivial, and it's brought me some amazing epiphanies and observations, and I have my camera to thank for that!

A Delicous Autumn Harvest!

It's long days in the field, a harvest festival when work's done, a cheering crowd in a football stadium, chrysanthemums punctuating a somber landscape. It's Halloween high jinx, pumpkins grinning toothy smiles, the crack of pecan pressed against pecan.It's the first curls of wood-smoke, fresh blisters from pushing a rake. It's crisp and fresh and mellow and snug, solemn and melancholy. And it's very, very welcome."

We took a trip to Half Moon Bay yesterday, and it's wouldn't be the same if we didn't visit the Farmer's Daughter food and veggie stand! It's a family tradition to pick up some Brussels's sprouts, as well as yams and onions and sometimes Heirloom Tomatoes! Yesterday, we stuck to the sprouts, and some fingerling potatoes, and a few bulbs of garlic! But we aren't done for this harvest, so stay tuned to see all the recipes we come up with for this season!

It's HARVEST time. Time to celebrate. This EMPS assignment is a pretty easy one, and there is lots of room for interpretation. You can choose to photograph the best of a harvest bounty of autumn vegetables and fruits, or you can maybe get a little metaphorical with it.
