Autumn Leaf Of The Day #40/October 31st Done The Right Way

"Haunt an old house.
Ask for a treat.
Laugh like a witch.
Lick something sweet.
Offer a trick.
Wander a maze.
Echo a boo.
Exclaim the phrase—
Normal's unnatural on Halloween!”

~Richelle E. Goodrich
& a Little Poetry for Every Day of the Year

This isn't really a Halloween post, but it is Halloween and so I just had to pay tribute in some way. I love this poem. It's cleaver. It's also a nice departure from the real world stuff. Donald Trump feels like Michael Myers sometimes. He gets people killed, and terrifies the rest of us. But for this day, I choose to have a happy day, as it is meant to be enjoyed. So, I will enjoy the leaves, enjoy the candy, enjoy the costumes, enjoy the horror movies and take a deep cleansing breath.

Please enjoy me in letting go for one day, and renew!

And by the way, remember these wise words...

 "You know it's Halloween,
I guess everyone's entitled to one good scare."

Let There Be Autumn Light

"It was a beautiful bright autumn day,

with air like cider and sky so blue you could drown in it."

~Diana Gabaldon

Outlander

Few words. I am really tired. So tired that my body is screaming. I am not sleeping again. Yesterday, when I had been up well over 24 hours, I decided it might be a good idea to begin chasing down some autumn, first in Ione, second in Apple Hill. Bad idea! LOL. Not only did I find very little in autumn color, but it only served to exhaust me even more, but I did get a few nice shots in Ione. My little tree, just to the side of the downtown, has never let me down. It's still producing lovely leaves, and from year to year, I am never sure what color will be prominent, so it's always an adventure. This year it's red! A power color! Hopefully that's a good omen as well. We will overcome all this. We will be strong, and I will sleep again. Maybe as soon as November.

Yellow Leaves And Water Wheels

"My lovely November...
Have you seen my heart,
somewhere in your castle of yellow leaves?"

~A Waltz For Zizi

The sky is dark. We have been blessed with rain. Last Thanksgiving weekend absolutely was beautiful. A great mixture of sunny skies, and soft dark clouds. If I had my way, the weather would all always look like that. I love the dark days of winter. Autumn is where my heart lives, but winter is full of happiness too! Look how lovely that old water wheel is! The sky looks a bit gloomy, but with those gorgeous leaves to frame the water wheel, it comes together and is so picturesque, it makes me feel nothing but  grateful for both seasons, and so much beauty of autumn left to see, far into winter!

Roads

"When I am out and it is autumn,
my thank you's to the universe seem infinite."

~Darnell Lamont Walker

Last week, Alan and I took a ride to beautiful, Placerville, California. It's not all that far north, but the difference in terrain is quite striking! For instance, Placerville usually gets at least a small amount of snow each year, but I don't think it has ever snowed in Stockton. It's pretty mild there, in terms of weather, but sometimes, however, it turns into a true winter wonderland! I hope to be able to do some winter photos in the area this coming winter, because I really need to broaden my horizons when it comes to my photographs! I did a few winter photos just across the road in the town of Camino, right at the end of the winter, earlier this year, and to my happiness, there were even a few autumn leaves, still hanging from the trees! It always fills me with joy to come across a little bit of autumn, especially in deep winter! It makes waiting for my favorite season to come around again, a little more bearable!

The road to Placerville...

And earlier this year...

On An Autumn Jaunt

"I told some imprecisely imagined interlocutor
that each year I hoped to have outgrown being moved by the autumn and each year I hadn't"

~Bridgid Brophy
The King Of A Rainy Country

On an autumn day, we took a ride to find clear skies, clear air, and autumn in all it's splendor. We didn't have to go very far either, just a short jaunt to Placerville and the city of Camino, just across the road! The drive there was absolutely beautiful! Every imaginable color was on display, and full of spicy autumn beauty! There is snow predicted for this week, and with half a chance we will be able to drive back up, and hopefully, I will be able to photograph snow and autumn in all their intense glory! My heart is doing back flips just thinking about the possibilities!

And then the moon, almost full, waiting for nightfall.

An Apple A Day...

"Seasons of mists and mellow fruitlessness! Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless with fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run; To bend with apples the moss'd cottage trees, and fill all fruit with ripeness to the core."

~John Keats

Is there anything better, on a cold autumn night, like some freshly made apple cider? Add a little spice, and it's just the thing to soothe a weary soul. And it's pretty healthy too, which is just what I need after a month of fast food on road trips, and several bags of Trick or Treat candy! Ugg, I am eating the very last piece of the fun sized Milky Way bars we bought! Sometimes, it feels really good to know that vacation is over, and it's time for reality, and schedules, and normal hours for sleep and eating! All good things for any age, but especially for me right now.

Late autumn, while beautiful and definitely my favorite season, when it turns from warm with a slight chill, to cold with little sun, my Fibromyalgia begins to scream at me. That's why it's good to get back to a more normal schedule, because getting out with the camera will probably be cut back, now to the weekends only. But with a little planning, I can make it work! And who knows, if a special opportunity presents itself, I might be able to fit in a photo jaunt on a weekday or two!

Acorn Woodpecker

"In order to see birds it is necessary
to become a part of the silence."

~Robert Lynd

That pretty bird, is a female Acorn Woodpecker. It is a new bird for my album of birds, and I spotted it on a trip through Ione, on our way to Placerville, last Wednesday afternoon. It's one of the smallest woodpeckers I photographed, but it might just be one of  the most colorful ones! I was very happy to see such a lovely creature, and I am hoping to do a little more bird hunting while we are on vacation. I have always wanted to photograph an owl in the wild, but haven't had the chance, maybe this vacation I will get lucky and spot one! Fingers crossed!

And speaking of colorful... isn't this color amazing? This is a vineyard in Camino, California, in the Apple Hill region! I absolutely love this beautiful burst of autumn colors! While there are only a few trees in Apple Hill that actually produce autumn colors, the vineyards more than make up for it with beautiful rolling hills that look like this! Oh my, I could look at it forever!

The Colors Of Apple Hill

"When everything looks like a magical oil painting,
you know you are in Autumn."

~Mehmet Murat ildan

Alan and I paid a visit to Apple Hill yesterday, and the autumn life filled my heart with so much happiness! Everything kinda looked like it was covered in cinnamon and cloves, and the smell of freshly picked apples was amazing! Truly, it wouldn't be autumn for me, without a trip to Apple Hill, especially in October!

Can't you just taste those apples?
Sweet?
Tangy?
Juicy?
Delicious!
