Dirty Dancing

I am pretty sure everyone on the planet has seen, Dirty Dancing, but if you haven't, it's the ultimate rom-com, which always makes me sob my eyes out. And for those reasons I won't recap the plot, I will just say, Patrick Swayze was amazing. What a performer, be it dancing, singing, or being impressive as an actor. My two favorite Swayze films are Dirty Dancing, and Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. Jerry Orbach, another lost favorite actor of mine, delivers a heartbreaking turn as the perfect father, who expected perfection from his eldest daughter, Baby.

Baby: "Me? I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw, I'm scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I'm scare of walking out of this room, and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you."

Trivia: "Hula Hana" was co-written by actress, Julia Brucker, who played Baby's sister, Lisa Housman, and choreographer, Kenny Ortega.

Sandhill cranes are such romantic characters. They dance and spruce up their feathers to entice a future mate, and then when they find one, the pair will mate for life, but they continue to jump and dance for each other throughout the seasons, and their lives, to strengthen their bond with each other. They are beautiful birds, with a beautiful story, and I am constantly fascinated and delighted by them. How romantic! While their life together is forever, they actually continue to work on their marriages, by being the very best versions of themselves possible. Cranes in captivity have been known to live up to 80 years, while cranes in the wild live up to 30 years. I have been lucky to be married to a guy who loves me unconditionally, and who still behaves in all circumstances as the best man he can be. Married 33 years now, I guess we are just an old pair of Sandhill cranes! We could have a worse example to live by. Cranes do a similar dance and jump to ward off predators, which is very romantic in it's own way. You can read a little more about these terrific birds, here and here.

It was the last beautiful flower on the bush it was growing on. All around it, dead and dying flowers, but this one looked absolutely pristine. It was dancing in the wind like it had been choreographed by Twyla Tharp.  I had to pay it tribute. Cull Canyon park was a feast for the eyes last weekend, and I am so glad we visited. I doubt I will be visiting again for at least a couple weeks, because tomorrow I am planning to head to Sacramento to do some leaf peeping, probably near the Crocker Gallery. It's one of my favorite haunts this time of year. I am hoping to be doing a lot more museums on this vacation, but I also want to visit some federal lands and some parks, plus the leaf peeping, and the movies, and Monterey, and San Francisco and Berkeley, and movie locations, and, and, and. I have way too much planned, to fit into just 4 weeks. It looks like there might be an impeachment to hold my interest as well, so there's that! But we are talking about right now, and visiting Sacramento. It's motto is "City of Trees" and I plan to visit as many as possible before autumn is over! They have over 110,000! That's a lot of leaves, dancing around in my brain, like Twyla's watching.

Fleur-de-Lis

It was a perfect Fleur-de-Lis!

One day, about a 10 days ago, I was in a grove of beautiful trees, searching for as many lovely leaves as I could find, for my autumn leaf project, when I saw a particularly lovely one, separate from it's tiny gray branch, and dance slowly to the earth. It gave me chills, because it had an interesting shape to it, and it's color was striking! But I knew I was experiencing a moment of magic, when I realized the leaf's shape  was a perfect example of the symbol of a Fleur-de-Lis. I couldn't believe it! 

I looked up in the branches of the tree that it had come from, but there wasn't any other leaf that had as perfect a form as this one did. There were some that came close, but there just was no rival. It was a magical little leaf, and it will always make me smile when I look back on it. I knew that I had to make it the final autumn photograph, for autumn 2018! Not the final, Leaf Of The Day, mind you, but the final photograph of my favorite season, autumn!

I will miss you magical Autumn!

Dylan Auditions For Dancing With The Stars

Funny story. There is a big storm going on here in the Bay Area, so on Monday afternoon I thought it would be nice to spend some time with the boys, playing Mouse Hunt and Chase the birdie. I just thought it would make the boys happy to have us play with them... and I knew it would lift my spirits. Alan got the catnip monkey on a stick and swung it around for the boys to chase. Hendrix didn't want to jump, but Dylan really got into the fun! I tried to get some good action shots of him, because he is such a good jumper, but all the photos look more like he was doing "jazz hands" or actually... "jazz paws!" LOL. What do you think? Does he have a future on Dancing With The Stars? Tee Hee...
