#PhotoByRequest: Black And White Moods

"Such days of autumnal decline hold a strange mystery
which adds to the gravity of all our moods."

~Charles Nodler
Smarra and Trilby

For this time around of #PhotoByRequest Karen chose the subject of "Black and White Moods." I love this one, because vacation was anything but a non stop joy-fest, in fact, I couldn't be happier it's over! A lot went wrong. The burglar that tried to break in just three days before it was to begin! The burglar came back two more times after it began. PG&E prevented us from attending our annual free movie screening in Orinda, and the following week when it finally showed, I was experiencing a full blown Fibromyalgia fit. Three times we tried to visit our favorite federal parks, and found that they had closed that day, due to EXTREME FIRE DANGER, including Mt. Diablo and Mt. Tamalpias! Next came our anniversary dinner. I picked lunch at Sizzler.

That was a really bad idea, due to the fact that they were 45 minutes late with bringing us something to drink, and then finally our meal. I was trying to save some money, and I got what I paid for. Next came the near fatal car accident on highway 99, that we were kinda/sorta in. I say that because the car slammed into the car in the lane beside us doing 65, and how it didn't fishtail into us is a miracle! Alan and I didn't realize until the next day, that our car was damaged, not badly, just a few scratches, but considering what could have happened, we were very lucky!

In that it was autumn, the time of year that we always take, for the absolute beauty of it, we began to depend on the leaves changing to make up for a lot of the disappointments, but it's heartbreaking this year, because it's almost as if autumn itself is depressed! The trees have not put on their bright colors. Most are dull and some are just dead! I found some beauty here and there, but I am having to really hunt for it. It's sad. But one day, while we were still on vacation, we drove through a, Jack In The Box, to grab a couple sodas, and I spotted this photo of Jack Box in the window. His photo made me laugh, because it seemed to nail exactly how I was feeling. I identified with him, and felt less alone, even if the kinship was with a fictional character.

We are both happy vacation is over, and we are grateful to be back on a schedule that makes sense. We have been happy, and less fussy with each other. That is a good thing. Maybe we will do some little jaunts while it's still autumn, and continue to search for the colors. I don't want to give up on all the incredible beauty. I need it. I love it. We both enjoy the annual cascade of falling leaves, so there is some joy still out there, but I have never been so happy to share a black and white feeling in photographs so much. It was a sad time, but that photo left me hopeful and unwilling to give up, just because I was tired! So, the search for autumn continues, and I am ready for what I might discover along the way!

Here are more Black and White Moods...

Being disabled leaves me with a strange kind of gratefulness. I am grateful that there is a little help, so I can pursue things that make my life so much better.

It Was One Of Those Perfect Days...

"It was one of those perfect autumn days, when air is cool enough to wake you up but the sun is also kissing your face."

~Anita Diamant
The Boston Girl

The leaves are everywhere. Some are falling, some are just beginning to have their last say. There's a special tree in Placerville that always just stuns me with its beauty! I swear, sometimes when the wind blows a certain way, I think I can hear each leaf on that tree singing. Silly, I know, it's probably just me. It's just that the song I hear is so pretty, and it always makes my heart smile, even on the saddest of days. Come to think of it, there are other trees that sing to me in autumn. Hmm... it must be a conspiracy.

Autumn Sunset 2019 #1

"May you fall in love with October
and all the beauty it brings,
May your life be as colorful as
the turning of the leaves
On each blessed autumn day."

~Charmaine J. Forde

This is the last few moments, of a stunning autumn sunset I managed to capture last Thursday, just before Alan and I drove over the Altamont Pass. We were on the way home from a disastrous attempt at attending a movie in Orinda. I will say more about that vacation adventure later in the week. For now, enjoy this autumn sunset, courtesy of God.

My "Stuff You See Along The Way" Album

"Because it's like taking a vacation from real life,
and real life is mostly terrible."

~Kara Lee Corthron
The Truth Of Right Now

This past year has been exhausting. One dreadful day, after another, so I was really ready for our vacation, but I have to tell you, our vacation was a mixed bag of experiences, so I was ready to get back to real life. It wasn't the most relaxing or fun vacation we have ever had, but we did have an amazing time here and there. We took lots of day trips, and we enjoyed the autumn sun very much! Watched a lot of movies, mostly Halloween/spooky themed movies, but we also watched a lot of different Rob Lowe movies, my favorite being, St. Elmo's Fire! And no, I haven't forgot to clue you in about our Rob Lowe experience/memories, I am just saving them for next week! So stay tuned for the details! It's kinda fun! Well, it was fun for us!

Anyway, because we took so many day trips, mostly around the Central Valley, Carson City, and the Sierra, we naturally saw all kinds of interesting things! Stuff I had NO IDEA even existed! We found some new restaurants, and parks! We found a lot of amazing little towns, bright with autumn color, and we did what we could to just take a step back from the muck of day to day politics! But one odd thing that kept coming up, that we hadn't noticed on past vacations, was that people seemed grumpy, and not quite as welcoming. I can't blame them, they are living in the same world we are, and they weren't on vacation! It's important to try to remember right now, we are all under stress, and it's also best to remember, if someone offends you, and you know you did nothing wrong, it's not you, it's the world weariness we are all under!

But Stand Up For Yourself With Forgiveness!

Art About Town: Orinda... "Asymmetic Nouveau Victorian Chair" By Colin Selig

"Asymmetric Nouveau Victorian Chair"
By Colin Selig

"The idea is salvation by imagination."

~Frank Lloyd Wright

"Mutha Hen"
By Eileen Fitz- Faulkner

Isn't that chair just the cutest thing? It's not just a pretty blue chair, it's a neat piece of public art! There are actually two of these blue chairs, that sit fairly close to each other in front of the shops along Moraga way, in the town of Orinda, California. There are several pieces art in the general area, including a gorgeous brown hen, which I posted about last October!

I love visiting Orinda, which sits just on the east side of the Caldecott tunnel, just outside Berkeley, and I wish I could get by more often, but it is another one of the places I had to give up when we moved to the Central Valley. I have gained so much in the move, new little towns to explore and learn about, and I have a good time with that, but I never forget places I fell in love with, when I lived in the Bay Area, like Orinda.

It looks like a blink from the freeway, but it has so much to offer! A great movie theater, some wonderful shops at Theater Square. Yummy restaurants, and definitely cool public art! And in autumn, it absolutely bursts with beautiful bright spicy colors! The leaves there are fabulous! Visit there one day, if you are in the area, it's great!

A Witch Moon Over Orinda

"Give them pleasure.
 The same pleasure they have
when they wake up from a nightmare."

~Alfred Hitchcock

We are getting close to Halloween. My favorite holiday! Certainly my favorite holiday of autumn! I love decorating, I love getting the candy ready for the kids. I love picking out costumes with Alan. And I love creating special graphics with original photographs! The photograph above is one I can't take credit for, it's Alan's. I took one similar last year, but he managed one from a slightly different angle, and it's gorgeous, so I thought it would be fun to post one from my talented hubby!

Our vacation officially began last Thursday, which was our 26th wedding anniversary! We went out to lunch, which was awesome, and then we caught a free showing of one of our favorite movies, Halloween. I told you a little about it last week, but I want to show you a few of the photos I didn't include with that post!
