RRC: Guess What This Is

"It is one of the commonest of mistakes to consider that the limit of our power of perception is also the limit of all there is to perceive."

-C.W. Leadbeater

RRC: "Guess What This Is"
Suggested by Lisa, of the blog, Lisa's Chaos

Any ideas? Is it a cover of some sort? I place mat? Maybe it's a test pattern? Here's a clue... if you know me very well, you will be able to come up with the answer.

Good Luck!

I will post the reveal in an update to this entry on Monday! Don't forget to come back at that time!

The Reveal...

Like I said, if you know me, you might be able to figure out what this is. Well, you know I love art and museums... right? Well this image is a photograph of a work done by Gerhard Richter and it is titled, "Strontium." It hangs in the main court at the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, in San Francisco. It's one of my favorite pieces in the whole museum. When I go there, and I see it, it's like visiting an old friend!

Here is a gallery from the artist's website. It will give you an idea of it's scale.

Okay, you have seen my entry for the challenge, now it's time to go see what everyone else has come up with!

Orange Is The Happiest Color?

"Orange is the happiest color"

-Frank Sinatra

Lately, in an attempt to stave off major depression, I have been exploring ways to help myself feel less negative. An Apple Martini works pretty well and hey, there's always Feng Shui! A little Feng Shui never hurts... right? Well unless you are drunk... in that case, drunk decorating rarely works for anyone! I speak from experience... remember that. DO NOT DECORATE WHILE DRUNK! JUST SAY NO TO THAT! LOL. I kid... and I digress.

Seriously, I have been a little down lately, and with good reason. Things are tense with the California State Budget, but it's completely out of my hands. I just wish there was more I could do to help Alan feel better about things. I make him laugh, and we are going on a small FREE adventure at the end of the month, so at least we have something to look forward to, but it's difficult to do much more then that, except be there for him.

He's there for me! My mood has been blue for a while now, and I really have to try to find the inspiration in things. I make the effort as much as I can. The other day we took a walk in the Botanic Garden, in Tilden Park, and to my delight, there was color everywhere! Usually in the summertime there isn't a lot of blooming going on, but it's been an unusually cool summer and I suppose it is delaying the inevitable wilting that goes on in summer.

I am looking out my window, and it is really cloudy outside. It's dark. It's cold too. My desktop widget is reading 57 degrees. Needless to say, my hands are swollen and my mood is quiet. Not depressed mind you, just quiet. I have fought depression most of my life, and I know what to do to take care of myself, so I will be okay, but my goodness... everything is so stupid right now.

Forgive me, I didn't mean to get all deep on you. I guess I am just taking everything too hard. But the general news lately has been scary has hell... you know?

Will the Gulf Coast ever stop bleeding?

Why are Republicans so selfish?

Will someone please tell Sarah Palin to shut up? Forget it, I'll do it. BE GONE WITCH!

Mel Gibson is worthless, which is sad because he has talent.

It's cold. Why is it this cold in July? Oh yeah that GLOBAL WARMING THING!!!

I wonder if I should book a 1-hour special so I can explain what I am planning to do this Fall.

Frank Sinatra once said that Orange is the happiest color. I wonder why he felt that way. Did he see it in a sunset and begin to smile? Did he eat an especially good orange for breakfast one morning and instantly feel good? Did he own an Orange Tabby Cat? Why Orange?

Personally, I like Purple.

Green is nice too... ooooh and Yellow!

Pink is my favorite color, but I can't wear it.

Maybe I will spend the day at Home Depot, browsing the color samples. Hey, it's free!

On A Mid-Summer Afternoon...

Then followed that beautiful season... Summer...
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

If all summers were like this one, I could really come to love summer! Can you believe it, it's sunny and 64 degrees outside. All the roses in my flower garden are in bloom, and pretty soon we will have some amazing sunflowers to compliment everything. I even found 16 little Heirloom tomatoes growing on the tomato vine. The garden is just bustling with life. It makes me feel so alive and at peace. :) Today, I am not dwelling on all the bad stuff, I am just enjoying whats going right!

RRC: Food Preparation

"Keep in mind that you should conduct yourself in life as at a feast."

-Epicetetus

RRC: Food Preparation
Suggested By Sherrie, of the blog, Sherrie's Stuff

Food... YUM. For me, the only thing better then eating food, is preparing food! I LOVE IT! Cooking is one of my most relaxing creative outlets. I create recipes, as well as, hunt them down on the net. I like to try new techniques for preparing just the right dish for the meals Alan and I eat. Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good frozen pizza from time to time, but I really love making my own pizza from crust to crowning cheese glory. I like that I get to control how fresh the ingredients are, and how many calories I get for my buck! The only downside might come when I have trouble with the arthritis in my hands, but Alan always jumps right in to help out. I am so grateful he enjoys cooking as much as I do!

We planted a nice garden this year, with all kinds of wonderful salad fixings. I was hoping it would be ready for presentation for this RR challenge, but unfortunately the only fresh ingredients ready for prepping is the beautiful lettuce. But that's ok, it will work nicely as the base for a recipe I have been developing. Here is the recipe, and the prep. I hope you like them both!

Balsamic Apricot Grilled Chicken Salad
w/Creamy Apricot/Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

2 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

Balsamic/Apricot Marinade/

1 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/3 Cup Balsamic Vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground pink peppercorns
1/3 cup plain fat-free yogurt
3 tbs. Low Sugar or Sugar Free Apricot Preserves

In med. bowl combine Olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and SF Apricot preserves. Halve the mixture and pour one half into a large ziploc bag. and reserve the rest in a chilled mixing bowl placed in the refrigerator. Add the chicken to the bag and toss to coat both sides. Marinate 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, grill the chicken breasts for about 8 minutes or until no longer pink inside. When internal temp. has been reached, remove chicken from the grill and let stand for about 10 minutes.

For the dressing; Take the second mixture of marinade and add the plain yogurt. Process until smooth. Prepare two dinner salads to taste. I use a mixture of red/green leaf lettuce, fresh spinach, chopped tomatoes, avocados and chopped strawberries and apricots. Slice the cooled chicken breast into strips and arrange on top of the salad mixture. Top with chopped, candied walnuts and the creamy Balsamic Dressing. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

A Dinner Salad In Preparation...

As Normal Can Be At $7.25 Per Hour

From For Ellipsis

"Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love will make it wag it's tail."

-Richard Friedman

Back to normal. Alan just finished the second of two vacation stretches and now things are back to normal. Well, as normal can be, given that Governor Schwarzenegger has just signed an order lowing Alan's pay to $7.25 per hour! Frankly, while my schedule might be back to what it was a couple week's ago, my life really isn't. We are being legally robbed! Wrap your brain around that. The Governor, and the state legislators, can't do their jobs, and state workers are being held captive!

Alan and I might... just might... be able to keep our cottage. It will depend on if the owner will work with us. We have lived her nearly a decade, and she has been pretty easy to work with, but let's face it, she has bills to pay also. If she won't budge on the rent, we will lose both cars. We have stocked up on food, so we will be able to eat for a few months, and we have the cats well stocked on their needs as well. The phones will be shut off sometime around Thanksgiving, but for now the we have a few luxuries covered.

It's simple really. Don't you think?

What isn't simple is the way other families of state workers in California will handle things. Families with children and elderly to care for. Families that have suffered through the 3 days a month furloughs over the last couple years. Most of those families have had to use whatever savings they had, just to keep their heads above water. They don't have the money to sustain themselves at this point. Schwarzenegger and his Republican cohorts had driven this state to the brink, but hey, the bright side is that this is an election year, and I think most folks know what the right move will be. Can you say JERRY BROWN FOR GOVERNOR? Although, to be honest, in a lot of ways, he isn't any great prize.

Sigh.

He's better then the alternative, which I suppose makes him the man for the job! I don't think he will be able to clean up the mess Schwarzenegger has left for him. I hold little hope about that. Actually, I hold NO HOPE AT ALL.

Let's face it. With Republicans on the federal level, determined to stop every move that will help America recover, and Republicans on the state level, determined to steamroll over any state level recovery, what hope do we have as a nation? If average every day republicans don't wake up and see that their representatives only have the interests of the wealthy and big business as their first priority, then they get what they deserve come the fall!

It's really very simple.

Don't you think?

RRC: Broken

From For Ellipsis

"Cats whiskers are so sensitive, they can find their way through the narrowest crack in a broken heart."

-Unknown

RRC: Broken
Suggested by Julie, author of the blog, "Julie Barrett's Journal."

I bet your are wondering what a quote about cat whiskers, has to do with our current RR topic of "Broken." Simple. Here's what happened. In the autumn of 2008 I became a mommy to two little lost souls. 2 kittens. A black cat we named Hendrix, and an orange tabby we named Dylan. They were beautiful new friends, and wonderful kittens, and there was a lot of love to be found in our house. It was BLISS! One thing about kittens, like human toddlers, they have energy, lots and lots of ENERGY! So much so that they could be most accurately described as FLYING MONKEYS! It was during one of their flights, and I swear there were capes involved, that Dylan and Hendrix flew across my desk, knocking my digital camera to the floor! It landed HARD! So hard in fact that it broke the little door that holds the batteries that power my life support system, AKA my camera. I cried. I cried some more, then I CRIED.

Truly, since Christmas Day, 2004, I have used my camera every single day. Photography is a big part of who I am. I live for it. I think I actually see the world in short little camera stills, rather then the way most people do, as one long movie scene. I take my camera with me everywhere I go, because I find inspiration in all aspects of life. I really learn from those tiny still moments. Sometimes it's moments in other peoples lives, and sometimes the moments are in mine, and sometimes the two come together in amazingly lovely and profound ways. So, what could I do with my broken camera? Go out and buy a new one? That wasn't possible, see my money tree hasn't bared fruit since it was damaged by the GOVERNATOR FRUIT FLY. Also known as California State Worker Forced Furloughs. LOL. Whats a girl to do? The only thing she can, she invests in a package of strong, extra thick rubber bands, and secures her trusty camera the best she can! Here are just a few photos I am especially proud of, taken with my broken camera...

RRC: Garden Portraits

"A photograph is a portrait painted by the sun."

-Unknown

RRC: Garden Portraits
Suggested by Sherrie, of the blog, Sherrie's Stuff

Above you see my garden, which is actually, a garden in progress. I decided earlier this year to create a Zen Garden for myself. Just a little place of beauty and peace, where I can go an sit and read and just be surrounded by beauty and light and life. You know what I mean? It's going to take me a while to get it the way I want it. I want to add more roses, and some new wind chimes, and maybe some pretty colored lights. I know for sure I want some small white picket fencing on the outside and perhaps some colored stepping stones. We'll see. Money is tight right now, but like I said, it is a garden in progress. But that's okay... I have patience. :)

Here are the roses I am most proud of this year...

I submitted this one for the New York Times "Moment In Time" project.

The colors on this rose makes me smile. It's lovely!

Here are a few more from gardens past...

Now that you have seen my garden portraits, be sure to visit the other participating Robins! I am sure you find some wonderful Garden Portraits! :)

A Day On The Bay

"If you're alive, you can't be bored in San Francisco. If you aren't alive, San Francisco will bring you to life."

-William Saroyan

Last Wednesday, Alan and I decided to take a cruise on the San Francisco Bay. We had a free ticket, so we only had to purchase one! It was amazing! So much fun. I love dating my husband! After the cruise, we had lunch on Pier 39 at the Wipeout! I love the bay, I could have stayed out there on the water all day!

We sailed passed Ghiradelli...

Next the Palace of Fine Arts and the Marina Green...

Next Fort Point...

Onto the Golden Gate...

Past the Marin Headlands...

Next onto Alcatraz... "The Rock"

And finally... back to San Francisco at Pier 43

I LOVE it here!

:)

I LOVE dating my husband!
