A Sunday In Bodega Bay

It was a nearly perfect day in Bodega Bay. We spotted a few more birds, but the star of the day wasn't a bird, it was this adorable Sea lion, sunning himself in the warm afternoon Bodega Bay sun. I watched him for about 15 minutes or so. It was soul cleansing. I miss the Sea Lions of Pier 39 in San Francisco, so this was a very cool find! The dock sits right behind the Tides Restaurant, so could that have been the same dock where Melanie Daniels rented the boat she used to reach Mitch Brenner's house in the movie, The Birds? I'd like to think so. It's been a long time since that movie was filmed, and a lot of things have changed, but the beauty and fun of Bodega Bay, hasn't changed a bit!

October was such a busy month, we did a lot of things on vacation, we went a lot of places, but we also kept to our traditions for the most part, one example being taking a ride on the amphibious vehicle tour, Ride The Ducks. Every year we catch a waiting duck, and tour North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square, the Financial District, South of Market and AT&T Park, then hold on tight as we slide off a ramp into the gorgeous San Francisco Bay! Once in the water we tour past military ships at dock, and float over to McCovey Cove, just out in the water, to the right of the ballpark!

As you might imagine while on the tour we see some marine and bird life, but on this voyage, we were treated to a rare up close and personal treat of a sea lion sunning himself on the ship Cape Horn, and laughing at us as we floated past him! What a beautiful noise they make! I love them, they are another thing about San Francisco that keeps me head over heels in love with the place! 

He was a great surprise!

What a great place to nap! And what a great way to see a sea lion up close! The Ride The Ducks tour is a lot of fun. Take the tour if you ever visit San Francisco! I am a Bay Area native, and I always learn something new from the tour! It's awesome!

Something Wicked This Way Comes?

Have you heard about the strange case of the missing sea lions? Pier 39 in San Francisco usually has hundreds of them along the wharf area, but since the end of last October they have been mysteriously disappearing... at an alarming rate! In fact it all occurred virtually overnight! I am so glad I got to go to Pier 39 in March of last year, and was able to capture this picture of them while they were still there. Who knew that in less then a year, they would be mostly gone. :( Local marine biologists have been investigating what might have happened, but so far the situation has them stumped. Earlier today I saw on my local news about a sudden influx on California sea lions found in Oregon, which is good news because at least they are safe, but still one has to wonder... why did they leave San Francisco, and at such a fast rate? :(

Personally, I find the whole thing rather spooky. I wonder if they had some sense of something bad coming our way? And the moderate earthquake we had this morning really isn't helping my mood or my nerves! The 4.1 quake was centered a few miles north of Milpitas, and it was a good jolt to us here in the East Bay. As always, the news reminds us not to be worried, but they also never fail to mention that someday we will be facing the BIG ONE. Fine. Thanks for reminding me. :(

Will 2010 be the year that all of California's woes were erased by the BIG ONE? That's one way to fix California's budget problems I guess... LOL... ROCKING AND ROLLING and SLIDING into the Pacific Ocean in a matter of moments! WEEE! Hey, living here means occasionally the earth will move under your feet. That's just the way it is, but as for the sea lions, well, until someone can give me a simple scientific explanation I think I will lean just the least little bit toward the superstitious side of my reasoning and do a little praying. I just hope it's not too late. I know one thing, a 4.1 quake isn't enough to drive the sea lions away.

I told you last week about a day, Alan and I spent recently, playing tourist, well, this was just one more sight from that day, the sea lions at Pier 39. It was a really warm day and they were just sitting on the dock, soaking up the late winter sun. I had forgotten how much fun it is to just stop and watch them being sea lions. Simple. Happy. Life. I tend to see things differently when I am out with my camera. My camera allows me to have an extraordinary life.
