RRC: Broken

From For Ellipsis

RRC: Broken
Suggested by Julie, author of the blog, "Julie Barrett's Journal."

I bet your are wondering what a quote about cat whiskers, has to do with our current RR topic of "Broken." Simple. Here's what happened. In the autumn of 2008 I became a mommy to two little lost souls. 2 kittens. A black cat we named Hendrix, and an orange tabby we named Dylan. They were beautiful new friends, and wonderful kittens, and there was a lot of love to be found in our house. It was BLISS! One thing about kittens, like human toddlers, they have energy, lots and lots of ENERGY! So much so that they could be most accurately described as FLYING MONKEYS! It was during one of their flights, and I swear there were capes involved, that Dylan and Hendrix flew across my desk, knocking my digital camera to the floor! It landed HARD! So hard in fact that it broke the little door that holds the batteries that power my life support system, AKA my camera. I cried. I cried some more, then I CRIED.

Truly, since Christmas Day, 2004, I have used my camera every single day. Photography is a big part of who I am. I live for it. I think I actually see the world in short little camera stills, rather then the way most people do, as one long movie scene. I take my camera with me everywhere I go, because I find inspiration in all aspects of life. I really learn from those tiny still moments. Sometimes it's moments in other peoples lives, and sometimes the moments are in mine, and sometimes the two come together in amazingly lovely and profound ways. So, what could I do with my broken camera? Go out and buy a new one? That wasn't possible, see my money tree hasn't bared fruit since it was damaged by the GOVERNATOR FRUIT FLY. Also known as California State Worker Forced Furloughs. LOL. Whats a girl to do? The only thing she can, she invests in a package of strong, extra thick rubber bands, and secures her trusty camera the best she can! Here are just a few photos I am especially proud of, taken with my broken camera...

Hi Carly,

A very nice write-up and take on the theme. I'm glad your camera is still working, it reminds me of when a lens slipped out of my camera bag and rolled all the way down a flight of stairs. Amazingly that still works too.

You have some good shots at the end of your post.

Have a great weekend. :)

"Make it do. Use it up. Do with out."

Those were the watch-words after the Depression as we headed into the economic scarcity of World War II. Forgotten by many, but still valuable as one struggles under the constraints of a Governor who thinks furlough days are a solution for imbalanced budgets.

You and your camera are proof the old saw is still valid.

Beautiful photos, and a cute story about your little kitties ! With my four I was quiet lucky, I don't remember that they broke anything and now of course they are very careful.

Doesn't look like the damage has stopped you from being able to capture some great pictures. Love the fix!!!! Wish my broken camera could have been fixed so easily. Regardless, I feel your pain, and know it all too well.

One of my compact camera suffered the same fate, broken cover for the battery but not by any cats as I don't have any. I used strong tape to cover it, and it was all well. After I bought another camera, I sold off the other camera to a friend.

I love that firs shot, so much colors in the trees!

Gorgeous photos; you'd never guess your camera was "handicapped"! I got a chuckle out of that picture. My daughter had a little Nikon with the battery compartment door broken that she was going to throw away. I taped it up to keep it closed, and that little camera is still going strong. Perfect for a budding young photographer too!

Your photos are always such a treat for the eyes, even if it takes me a few weeks to comment on them! My first 35 mm camera was a hand-me-down from my brother, a Canon AE1. There was a little door on the front of it, I think for the battery, that no longer latched. So Steve secured it with adhesive tape. I think I ended up with a rubber band. I got a lot of use out of that camera - until it was stolen a myear later. :(
