EMPS: Houses Of Worship

From For Ellipsis

"All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of spacethat contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space."

-Phillip Johnson

Isn't it beautiful? That is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Oakland Temple, in Oakland hills. I have been looking at that church since I was a very little girl. :) When I was a child, I imagined it was a castle, and inside was a beautiful princess waiting for her prince. You can probably imagine how big I smiled yesterday, when I went to the temple to photograph it, and saw a bride and groom posing for their photos. If you look really close, you can see them right in front of the temple. :) Perfect timing.

This gives you a nice look facing back towards San Francisco, and Oakland which is in the forefront.

First Presbyterian Church of Virginia City. In Virginia City, Nevada.

Virginia City is such a wonderful town to photograph. It is so full of history, and as you can see, beautiful churches! :)

beautiful photos carly. I have always found the temples to be breathtaking, I've had the great pleasure of being inside the newest one that was built in OKC a few years ago right before dedication and was blown away.

The little chapel is so quaint, it reminds me of something you would find while taking a leisurely drive down some old dusty country roads that is nestled away in peacefulness waiting to be discovered.

Those two churches are in such contrast to each other in structure. One so opulent while the other so down home country. You photographed both so beautifully. I love the fountain in the first and the spires reaching for the clouds.
And, the second is surrounded by natural growth...such a nice post!

I do like your new template, Carly. As for the churches, Steve and I were married in that Mormon Temple. They don't have wedding ceremonies like people in churches outside the Mormon faith have. I like the little Nevada church -- the spire and cross are precious.

Great shots as usual, Carly, and I love the new blog template too!

Carly, that first shot is really cool!!! I love the lighting highlights on the fountain with the dramatic sky behind. This might be my favorite shot of yours! It really made me look twice.

That first one does look like a castle. I like the fountain in the foreground.
